”One Unexpected injury during a trip cost me over $1000 out of pocket”
THE BAHAMAS INCIDENT
During our February 2023 trip to the Bahamas, an afternoon at the Atlantis water park turned into a medical emergency. My wife and I were riding a water slide when our raft flipped at the bottom, and when I tried to stand, I realized my right kneecap had completely dislocated.
Resort staff helped get me to the infirmary, where I faced a choice: a public hospital with a long wait, or a private one at higher cost. I chose the private hospital for faster care—but I didn’t have travel insurance covering international medical expenses.
After X-rays and treatment, including a knee brace, I was told to get further testing back in the U.S. I paid over $1,000 out of pocket before leaving, with more charges possibly still to come.
Not knowing the final cost was almost as stressful as the injury itself. Looking back, a relatively inexpensive travel insurance policy would have made everything so much easier.
I share this because accidents happen when you least expect them, and medical care abroad can be expensive and stressful. It’s not an experience I’d wish on anyone.
